Richard Mille RM UP-01

Richard Mille's first Ferrari watch is the thinnest timepiece in the world

This timepiece is 0.05mm thinner than the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra.

Richard Mille's partnership with Ferrari has already broken records.

The renowned Swiss watchmaker unveiled its latest watch, the RM UP-01 Ferrari, on Tuesday night. The new case is only 1.75mm thick, so it replaces the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra as the thinnest mechanical watch in the world.

The RM UP-01 Ferrari is the first watch of Richard Mille's multi-year partnership with the legendary Italian brand last year. What is the way to start. It looks like the brand known for its rugged sports watches is seeing the collaboration as an opportunity to do something completely new outside the box.

The cushion face of the new men replica watches is 51 mm wide and 39 mm wide from top to bottom, and is basically a bezel, designed like a sports car dashboard. It features a small sapphire-covered central dial showing the time, with two integrated crowns on the right (one for the function selector, the other for winding the watch), and a balance dial and Ferrari's iconic prancing horse logo on the left. Top to bottom, the front and the similarly streamlined caseback are only 1.75mm thick when clipped together. That makes it 0.05mm thinner, or 3% thinner, than the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra, which was only released earlier this spring.

In other words: the new watch itself is so thin that its leather strap is actually thicker.

Unlike other ultra-thin counterparts, Richard Mille and Ferrari's watches are powered by a unique movement rather than built into the caseback. Developed in collaboration with Audemars Piguet Le Locle, the hand-wound RMUP-01 movement features an extra-flat escapement and 23 jewels. It may only be 1.18mm thick and 2.82 grams, but it can withstand accelerations of up to 5,000 Gs and has a 45-hour power reserve. Almost as impressively, the watch that includes it is water resistant up to 32.8 feet, though it's hard to imagine anyone buying it wouldn't take it off before going into the water.

We'll see how long Richard Mille and Ferrari's best replica watches can hold onto that title. Bulgari has set and broken its own world record for the thinnest watch eight times.
